Why a “Gryphon”?

One reason I chose a gryphon as part of my logo is that it is part of my family crest. A gryphon is also the badge of Gray’s Inn, one of the four Inns of Court in England. However the primary reason I chose the gryphon as my law firms logo was because it just looked “neat.”

A gryphon (also spelled griffin) is a legendary creature with the body, tail and ear tuffs of a lion and the wings, head and talons of an eagle. Since the lion was considered to be the “King of the Beasts” and the eagle the “King of the Air”, the gryphon was thought to be an especially powerful and magestic creature, albeit mythical. Gryphons have appeared in Greek literature, in the writings of ancient Rome and Egypt, and a gryphon was also featured in Lewis Caroll’s “Alice in Wonderland.”

Heraldic gryphons, as in my family’s crest are usually shown rearing up, facing left, standing on one hind leg, with the other leg showing a raised claw. This posture is usually described as “sergant” or “rampant”.

This logo was created by my graphic designer Rita Post of Vogel Art, she created the logo by drawing a gryphon, duplicating and mirroring it to face each other and adding the scales of justice. (She said she thought making the gryphons “sergeant” didn’t look right, it wasn’t balanced. She felt that the balance in the logo was important as it implies the partnership between Gryphon Law Chambers and its clients.) I quite like the final result.

What is the difference between a “LL. B.” and a “J.D.”?

Prior to June 2009, the degree granted to graduation students from Osgrade Hall Law School of York University renamed the Bachelor of Laws (LL. B.) degree to a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree. The renaming acknowledges that this degree is a post graduate degree of greater than two years study.
